| Holiday Navajo Rug Auction |
|
Saturday, December 13th, 4:00 P.M.
Following up on the success of the first Navajo Rug Auction in Flagstaff in decades this past June, Flagstaff Cultural Partners and the Museum of Northern Arizona will host the Holiday Navajo Rug Auction at the Coconino Center for the Arts. The auction will take place December 13, 2008 with an auction preview at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. followed by the auction itself starting at 4 p.m.. It will feature 300 contemporary and vintage Navajo weavings ranging in a variety of styles. "We heard from so many folks at our last Auction that they wanted more of this kind of event in Flagstaff," says FCP Executive Director, John Tannous. "They liked the exchange with the audience when weavers are present as their own rugs go up for sale. And our auctioneers, the Burnhams, know how to make these events not only fun and lively, but an educational experience for everyone in attendance." Consignments will be accepted for this Auction. - Read the rest of this article.

Artists Coalition Opens New Gallery Space
After more than a decade of supporting Flagstaff's artists through popular programs like Flagstaff Open Studios and the Recycled Art Show, the Artists Coalition of Flagstaff (ACF) finally has a home to call their own. ACF opened a new gallery space downtown on November 7, 2008.
The new ACF Gallery, located at 13 North San Francisco Street, Suite 103, will be open for the upcoming First Friday ArtWalk on December 5, 2008. The current exhibition features the original art of thirteen local ACF member artists: paintings by Roberta Dawson, Gene MacIntyre, Yvonne Schilling, Beverly Smith, and Kathleen McFarland; jewelry by Vivian Delaporte and Araceli Walker; photography by Mike Frankel and Beth Hunter-Liberman; color pencil drawings by Rose Moon; quilt art by Judy Sall; Sumi ink art by Debbie Shepard; and candle lanterns and assemblages by Nancy DeBlois.
Mike Frankel, president of the ACF is quoted as saying, "When I walked into the gallery and saw the art displayed on the walls, my eyes welled up with tears. This gallery has been a dream of mine since I became president of the Artists' Coalition of Flagstaff 4½ years ago and a goal of the group since its founding for 12 years ago." The gallery is supported by grant funding from the Wendling Foundation and private donations. The renovation of the space into a gallery was a collaborative effort of all board members. The gallery is made available to all Coalition members offering an opportunity to showcase their work to the public. Exhibitions will change monthly spotlighting the broad array of talent with the Artists' Coalition. The Artists' Coalition of Flagstaff is a 501C non-profit organization. New members and tax deductible donations are always welcome. For more information contact; Mike Frankel @ 522-6969 or Nancy DeBlois @ 526-9194.

A Different Approach

December Artist Profile: Brenda Smith
by Elizabeth Vogler
The annual It's Elemental exhibition features artwork of amazing quality in glass, wood, ceramics, fiber, metal, stone, and a few other natural elements. Each year new and innovative art is displayed within the elemental theme, and a few artists have maintained the high level of creativity to be included year after year. One such artist is fiber artist Brenda Smith.
Brenda's beautifully designed and detailed quilts have been accepted by different juries each year since 2003 in the exhibition, and this year she proves once again that her non-traditional style and new methods of experimentation compliment the freshness and originality in the exhibition.
Smith has worked on several series over the years, allowing her to experiment with fiber techniques, themes, and patterns. A recent series, the Strata Series, often features dramatic juxtapositions with one side of the quilt representing rock strata with small, uneven lines created by fabric strips, and the other side, a hand-dyed solid piece. This type of patterning is far from traditional quilting, which she used to work in, but since 2000 has been developing her own designs. "I like working in series," Smith says. "It helps me focus while I try new techniques and styles". Another very innovative approach that Smith has developed is printing photographs onto fabric. Using a very old Xerox-type machine, Smith creates a "faux silkscreen" which she then applies to the fabric. In a lot of her Tree Series, Smith uses this technique to create a realistic textured look for the tree bark. Her interest in trees came when she moved to Northern Arizona. Having lived in desert climates all her life, she was not used to the abundance of foliage, which undoubtedly became inspirational. The photographs she uses are her own that she likes to take when traveling. Her interest in art began when she was young. Her father owned a black and white camera, which appealed to Smith as she held little talent in drawing or painting. Smith also enjoyed sewing, but not making clothing, and in the mid-80s she began to explore her creativity in quilt making. Smith works with fiber-reactive dye to apply her creative ideas in another way. After placing the fabric in a jar, she pours different dyes in, which results in a haphazard patterning of fabrics. When Smith uses these hand-dyed fabrics in her quilts, they create a highly unique style that is not found in traditional quilting.
~~~~~
To learn more about Brenda Smith, check out her website or send her an email. Come by the Coconino Center for the Arts to see three of her newest quilts in the It's Elemental exhibition, examples from both the Strata Series and the Tree Series. The exhibit will be on display through December 20, 2008.
