Flagstaff Cultural Partners e-Newsletter
February 2009
Flagstaff Cultural Partners

Greetings!

Welcome to the new and updated version of our monthly e-Newsletter!

We've re-designed the layout and have significantly shortened the length.  You'll find just as much content as our previous version.  However, that content is now accessible through links to articles on the web and on our website, so you can follow the articles and events that you want to follow without navigating through a larger newsletter.

Some of the content has changed, too.  There are three new sections we'll feature each month: Gallery of the Month, Artist Profile, and News in the Arts. The Gallery of the Month, as the name suggests, will focus on new happenings inside some of the art galleries around Flagstaff. The Artist Profile, a carryover, introduces you to an intriguing artist and his/her work.

Finally, News in the Arts will link you to several stories and news of interest in the world of the arts. The focus will not just be local, as we often will connect you to important trends in the arts on a statewide, nationwide and even international level.  Enjoy - and let us know what you think.

Cheers,

John Tannous "JT"
Executive Director

Artist Profile: Claudio Dicochea

by Claudio Dicochea

This month, Elizabeth Vogler sat down with artist, Claudio Dicochea.  Dicochea's work is featured in the art exhibition, Otra Voz, currently on display at the Coconino Center for the Arts.  His visual art springs forth from the beliefs that have shaped his life. Here's an excerpt from the article:

Identity, to Dicochea, is an interesting concept.  If identity is who you are, and that is based on where you are born and raised, it seems that you have little choice in shaping that identity.  "What we are born into is random and arbitrary," he says.  "We just come in, we don't have a say. We are seduced by the idea that we possess free will." This conflicting dichotomy poses some problems when defining one's identity.  The idea that our environment serves as a marker of who we are "very seldom matches up with what we feel we are inside."  Read more.
