Artist News and Links
Greetings!

A new year is upon us.  It gives us the opportunity to reflect back on what has been accomplished - and to look forward with renewed hopes.

We are specifically looking forward in regards to this newsletter.  Beginning with the February issue, this Newsletter will be taking on a completely different look.  We'll have new features such as "Gallery of the Month" and more news and information about what's happening in the arts.  The whole edition will feature fewer articles, but more links focused on connecting you to events and programs that are of interest to you.

As we develop that new format, this month's edition is somewhat truncated. Forgive us as we re-construct the newsletter to bring you even better content.

Also, we're merging (slowly) into the realm of social media. Check us out on Twitter.

Cheers,

John Tannous

Otra Voz
The New Exhibition at the
Coconino Center for the Arts

Sanctum, by Daniel Martin Diaz

Otra Voz or "other voice" is the new exhibition now open at the Coconino Center for the Arts thru February 19. Otra Voz aims to showcase talent from among the many accomplished artists in the Latino and Latina community of the Southwest.

This multi-media exhibit brings to Flagstaff a different taste. Several of these artists, very well known in the world of art, have never previously exhibited work in Flagstaff. Among those featured are Alfred J. Quiroz, Daniel Martin Diaz, Claudio Dicochea, Adriana Garcia, Adam Cooper-Teran,  and local emerging artist, Alma Angelina Aispuro.

Amongst the painters, Diaz, Quiroz, Dicochea, and Garcia, there is much range.
With subdued colors and aged panels, Daniel Martin Diaz' work sends my mind spiraling to a different time and place in history. No longer am I in a contemporary gallery, but have found myself examining ancient manuscripts. Cryptic and full of code and symbolism - each of his works views as an intense narrative of the unknown.

by Claudio Dicochea

Claudio Dicochea, working in a larger scale and with a broad palette, draws me in, but in an entirely different way. Eliciting influence from pop culture icons ranging from Dorothy Gale to Princess Di, Dicochea's narrative surrounds the viewer with fantastical nostalgic imagery melded with surreal abstraction.

Alfred J. Quiroz, also working with figures, leans towards the political realm. Expressing his views surrounding activists, political leaders and symbols of power. Quiroz' work is potent, licensing heat and an enthusiasm to dig further into each work.

The words "life lines" continually come to mind regarding the work of Adriana Garcia. Her strong female figures pulsate with electricity and life. Delicate and tenacious, they embody feminist beauty. Each paint stroke is strong, deliberate, intense.

Adam Cooper-Teran is a video artist. Each piece a work of whimsy and imagination. Another dreamscape artist, Cooper-Teran creates a new world with each new work.

Alma Angelina Aispuro is an emerging artist based in Flagstaff. With works ranging from flawless functional ceramics to her more recent collection of charming not-so functional small metal jewelry, Aispuro is an artist to keep an eye on as she consistently has something exciting brewing.

Otra Voz remains open at the Coconino Center for the Arts from January 10 through February 18, 2009.  The Center is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11am - 5pm.

A Night at the Oscars

In what has become a popular tradition for Flagstaff, Theatrikos Theatre Company will celebrate this year's Academy Awards with "A Night at the Oscars."  On the big screen, the televised broadcast of the awards ceremony will be shown as patrons enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks.

Upon arrival, a red carpet will lead you to the main event to watch the Oscars, vote for your favorite actors and films, bid at the Silent Auction and play Hollywood trivia and games, with prizes awarded.  Hors d'ouevres will be served, and there will be a cash bar, serving up Theatrikos unique cocktail, TheatriKosmos.

"Flagstaff knows how to celebrate," said Lynn Spence, Managing Director of Theatrikos. "A Night at the Oscars has become the can't-miss party each year because of the people who make it so much fun."

Tickets are available now online, at the Theatrikos Box Office, or by calling the Coconino Center for the Arts at (928) 779-2300. Tickets are $25/advance, and $30/door.

Proceeds from the event support Theatrikos, a 501c3 non-profit organization that offers high quality theatrical productions.  For more information about Theatrikos, visit them on the web.
