July 2009
Flagstaff Cultural Partners

Greetings!

I'm writing this in mid-June ... by the time you receive it, I'll be gone on vacation.  Well, not really gone.  Vacations these days are much closer to home, with "staycation" being the buzz word during these challenging economic times.  I'm no different on that front.  My pseudo-vacation includes a short trip with my kids to the coast, and then some time near the homestead exploring Northern Arizona.

Considering how gorgeous our area is and all the great things to do here, it could be a lot worse. :)

Enjoy your July!

Cheers,

John Tannous "JT"
Executive Director

Artist Profile: Lola Serkland

Lola SerklandThis month, Gallery Director, Jillian Asplund interviews ceramic artist, Lola Serkland. Serkland is currently showing two works of art in inFLUX, one of which won the prestigious Juror's Best of Show Award. Serkland shows her work regularly at the Artists' Gallery in downtown Flagstaff.  Here's an excerpt:

JA: Who are your top 3 artist  influences?
LS: The sculptor, Henry Moore, is a big influence on my figurative abstractions.  His use of "holes" or negative space and passages through the sculpture appeal to me.  Arthur Gonzales is a ceramic sculptor who makes very earth, narrative figures.  A two-week workshop with him has challenged me to find "story quality" in my figures or vignettes.  Another artist, with a more subtle influence, is...

Gallery of the Month: Flagstaff Photography Center

Flagstaff Photography Center

An excerpt from this month's article:

"Photography is a tool that facilitates my memory," says Jason Hasenbank. After working in Benham Gallery, Jason started to become intrigued by the curating side of art. "Creating a forum to discuss ideas and artwork is what really interests me." Now as Managing Director of Flagstaff Photography Center, Hasenbank gathers regional artists to create shows and photography forums that display diverse styles and photographic approaches. If a gallery has one goal in mind it should be to exhibit work that is diverse not only aesthetically but also in ideas. The Flagstaff Photography Center definitely understands this concept keeping viewers and gallery goers curious about upcoming exhibitions.
