Feature Event: inFLUX: An Exhibition of Dance
inFLUX: An Exhibition of Dance will exhibit artwork pertaining to and
inspired by all forms of dance. Sculpture, paintings, photography, and ceramics as well as other media will be featured. The featured artist is renowned sculptor, John Waddell. inFLUX is a national juried exhibition
that will be at the Coconino Center for the Arts, from May 23 - August 15, 2009. Throughout this schedule, there will be many dance performances, both at the Center and in the community. Follow the links below for the full schedule.

Dance performances from many of Flagstaff's dance companies, along with

Hula Dance Performance
Sunday, May 24, 1-3pm (FREE) Lecture and performance highlighting Hawaiian Hula Dance.

Artist Profile: Earl Duque
Earl Duque has been leading the charge in Northern Arizona to bring social dance back to the forefront of the arts community. Working through the national organization, USA Dance, Duque has created more awareness for social dance classes and opportunities here. Our Gallery Director, Jillian Asplund, interviewed Duque for this month's Artist Profile. Here's an excerpt of that discussion:
JA: Do you consider social dance to be an art form, recreation, or both?
ED: It's both. It can be a sport or recreation experience through a daily or weekly practice where one perfects the forms and the figures. Then it can take another level of expression and interpretation, making each dance an artful expression with each dance. During any social dance, be it ballroom, salsa, swing, contra dance or Argentine Tango, the dancers will begin to interact with the music. This interpretation of the music expressed by the dancers is Art.
