Drawing is the basis of all visual art. Since the Italian Renaissance, drawing the nude human figure has traditionally been the way artists learn to understand and see form. Michaelangelo taught us that those who master the figure through drawing can pretty much master all forms of art. And Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings were done by what is called “a thinking hand” - demonstrating how the human body relates to the natural world. But above all, these two artists created drawings as studies, as the basis for other art forms, whether it was painting, sculpture, or architecture.

Flagstaff Cultural Partners is pleased to announce a figure drawing exhibition titled Touching at a Distance, at the Coconino Center for the Arts. This exhibition will bring together work from students and faculty from four institutions: NAU, Arizona State University, The University of Arizona, and Appalachian State University. This body of work was executed not as the basis for, or as studies for other art forms, but as a means to an end—as finished works of art.

The exhibition is scheduled to coincide with the Flagstaff Festival of Science. It will include a lecture by NAU art historian, Dr. George Speer. Dr. Speer will address images of the body in contemporary art.  In conjunction with the exhibition there will also be two figure drawing workshops.  Shawn Skabelund, figure drawing Lecturer at NAU and exhibition curator, will facilitate the workshops.  See below for the schedule.
